CUPE is calling on the government to tackle the housing crisis by making significant investments in public housing. By ending government subsidies to for-profit developers and directing spending to public housing projects, we can ensure everyone has an affordable and dignified home.

Across Canada, housing is becoming more and more expensive, and public housing wait lists stretch for years. While working people struggle to keep up with rising mortgage or rent payments, for-profit developers are pocketing millions of dollars in federal support, with no requirements to build affordable units. These developers are taking public money to build homes that CUPE members and our communities can’t afford.

CUPE members see the impacts of these failed market policies every day. In homeless shelters, long-term care homes, and other public health and social services, our members provide front-line support to some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Only direct public intervention in the housing market can right the ship.

Housing is a human right. Public money should be spent on the public good, not on making private corporations richer. CUPE is calling on the government to tackle the housing crisis by making significant investments in public housing. Solidarity with CUPE 1490 members
Sister, Brothers, and Friends,

Our fellow CUPE members need our help. CUPE 1490 workers in Black River- Matheson, Ontario have been on strike all winter. They have been subject to disgraceful treatment from the mayor and council of Black River-Matheson, who have barred them as well as all CUPE members and staff from municipal buildings, hired scabs to do their work, and even threatened to have them arrested for exercising their legal right to strike.

We are asking all CUPE members to take a moment to send a letter to the mayor and council of Black River – Matheson to let them know that when they try to bully CUPE members in their community, our entire union is watching. Please share this email with your members and ask them to take a moment to send a letter in solidarity with Black River – Matheson members.

Solidarity means standing up for each other, no matter what division or sector we are in. By flooding the municipal council in Black River – Matheson with letters from across the country, CUPE members can send a message to all our employers, that we are willing to stand together to protect our rights. We are stronger when we stand together.

Child care needs your support
We need your help!

In Canada, nearly 50% of children live in a child care desert, meaning in an area where there are more than three children for every available spot in a child care facility.

While the Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care system has managed to reduce fees by an average of 50% for parents, securing a spot for their child remains a significant challenge.

To ensure every child has a child care spot, three major barriers must be addressed: the labour crisis in the sector, the lack of infrastructure, and the threat of privatization.

These are three different barriers, but they have one common solution: sufficient funding from the federal government.

Invite members of your local to send a letter to the media to bring this issue to the forefront of discussions and pressure the government to invest $17 billion in child care over three years: $7 billion to resolve the labour crisis in the sector and $10 billion in infrastructure.

Early childhood educators urgently deserve a fair recognition of the work they do, and this recognition comes through better working conditions and benefits, including access to a pension plan. This is how we will attract and retain enough child care workers.

CUPE 4500 members withdrawing all services from Coast Mountain Bus Company

BURNABY – CUPE 4500 and Coast Mountain Bus Company concluded mediation today but were unable to reach a tentative agreement. Without a settlement in place, CUPE 4500 members will be withdrawing all services from Coast Mountain Bus Company at 3:00 a.m. PT, Monday, January 22 for 48-hours. 

 

“With the help of our mediator, CUPE 4500 put in an honest effort to find some common ground with Coast Mountain. But we are still not near where we need to be in addressing our key issues,” says Liam O’Neill, spokesperson for CUPE 4500. “For a fair settlement, CUPE 4500 members need wage discrepancies closed between them and other TransLink supervisors, and we need to tackle critical workload issues.”

 

Starting Monday morning, CUPE 4500 members will have up picket lines at Coast Mountain Bus Company Transit Centres in Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, Burnaby, Port Coquitlam, and the SeaBus North Vancouver Terminal. Transit users in the Lower Mainland can expect the suspension of all bus and SeaBus services operated by Coast Mountain Bus Company.

 

“CUPE 4500 members are proud of the job we do for our passengers. Like them, our families and friends depend on transit too. We regret these disruptions and the challenges this will cause for the people we serve every day,” says O’Neill. “But Coast Mountain could have avoided this. Instead, they put us, and, through their inflexibility, transit users, in this situation.”
