Bargaining Update #2 – District of North Vancouver Bargaining

CUPE 389 Bargaining Update May 12, 2023

We wanted to provide a brief update on bargaining for District of North Vancouver members.

We are pleased to report that in our first meetings we have been able to agree to several non-monetary and fairly straightforward bargaining proposals. We feel that this is a positive start, but there are still several significant items to be discussed.

We continue to pursue collective agreement terms to enshrine job security and improve recruitment and retention and have communicated to the employer that this is a priority for the union.

Our focus, has been and will continue to be, ensuring we have a productive and progressive round of bargaining and working with the District to make sure CUPE 389 members have the supports they need at work to provide quality public services to residents, visitors and businesses in the District of North Vancouver.

We will be meeting again to bargain on May 24, and we expect to have another update following that.

To keep updated on this round of negotiations please make sure CUPE Local 389 has your personal email. Please visit our website here to update your contact info if needed.

If you have any questions, please ensure you attend our membership meetings. We hold them on ZOOM for easy access and you can find all the dates on our website.

NOTICE REGARDING BENEFIT PREMIUMS

NOTICE TO ALL CUPE 389 MEMBERS

CUPE Local 389 will end the practice of paying benefit premiums for employees who have exhausted their sick leave, are awaiting LTD, on LTD beyond 2 years, or any other paid or unpaid leaves from the employer.

In February 2023, the members of CUPE Local 389 passed a motion to end this practice, as it has become cost prohibitive for the practice to continue.

Each employee will be responsible for paying the premiums to your employer to continue with your benefits.  Each employer has their own system of collecting these premiums, and it is recommended that you reach out to your benefit manager at your worksite to set up these payments to avoid any lapse in coverage.

Please note that premiums paid for group benefits are a medical expense which can be claimed on your income tax.

CUPE BC – Public Childcare Now

Public Childcare Now

WHAT’S THE NEXT STEP IN BUILDING A UNIVERSAL CHILD CARE SYSTEM FOR B.C.?

The provincial government is committed to $10 per day childcare, a model CUPE BC strongly supports and advocates for. The federal government is committing significant resources supporting childcare for kids aged 0-5, but what’s missing is new spaces for school-aged kids.

We began our campaign for universal public childcare by promoting the “Seamless Day” model for Kindergarten-aged kids. Now that that model is being piloted, in more than 20 districts, it’s time to take the next step: before and after school childcare for all school age children. The most efficient and cost-effective way to get quality, accessible and universal school-aged childcare up and running quickly is to create spaces in public schools.

That’s why CUPE BC, in partnership with CUPE National, has launched our “Public Childcare Now” campaign.

We have the facilities already—there’s almost no need for capital expenditures or construction.

We have the trained staff available—qualified Education Assistants already are in place, and most don’t currently receive full-time hours.

For parents, it couldn’t be more efficient—drop your kids at school in the morning and pick them up at the end of the day. No more running to multiple locations or juggling competing schedules.

This solution:

  • increases learning opportunities
  • provides more customized care and assistance
  • reduces transitions and commutes
  • increases safety and security
  • provides greater accountability
  • is accessible to every family who wants it

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP
